Outdoor Carpentry That Survives the Winter

Exterior carpentry fails in predictable ways here: water sitting in a joint, a fastener that rusts, a post set on grade instead of below the frost line, or end grain left unsealed. The details that prevent all four cost very little during a build and are effectively impossible to add afterward.

We build fences, privacy screens, pergolas, arbours, planters, storage, and custom features using materials chosen for exposure rather than for the lowest line on a quote, with galvanized or stainless fasteners and footings that reach below frost.

Materials and What They Cost to Own

For anything you look at daily, a privacy screen beside a patio, the material difference is felt far more than it is on a fence at the back of a lot. Spend where it is seen and touched.

Pressure-treated: least expensive, needs periodic cleaning and sealing
Cedar: costs more, weathers gracefully, naturally rot and insect resistant
Composite and PVC: highest up front, effectively no maintenance

Composite and PVC require the least maintenance and hold up longest with no upkeep. Cedar performs very well and looks better as it ages. Pressure-treated lumber is the most economical and lasts well if it is cleaned and sealed periodically.
