What Drives Concrete Cost
Finish is the first lever. A standard broom finish is the most economical. Exposed aggregate washes the surface back to reveal the stone in the mix. Stamped concrete presses pattern and colour into the wet surface and costs the most, because of the forming, colouring, and sealing it adds.
After that it is the work around the pour: removing and hauling away the existing surface, correcting grade so water runs away from the house, and how much forming a shape demands. Curves and multi-level pours take far longer to form than a rectangle.
Access matters here as much as anywhere. A truck that can reach the pour is a different job from one that has to be barrowed through a side gate.
What Separates Concrete That Lasts
The visible finish is the last ten percent of the job. Everything that decides whether a slab is still sound in fifteen winters happens before it is poured.
- A properly compacted granular base underneath
- Correct slab thickness for the load it will carry
- Reinforcement through mesh or rebar
- Control joints cut at the right spacing, so it cracks where you chose
- Air-entrained mix, giving water room to expand in freeze-thaw
- Proper curing instead of letting a slab dry too fast in summer heat
A quote that never mentions base, thickness, reinforcement, or joint spacing is not describing the same job as one that does.

Concrete or Interlock
Concrete is the better answer where you want a clean, continuous surface with no joint lines, and where budget matters more than the eventual repair.
Interlock is the better answer where you want the surface to be repairable, want design options in colour and pattern, or are working on a driveway that will take heavy use. We install both and will tell you which suits your property rather than which suits our schedule.
No slab is guaranteed against hairline cracking in this climate. Any contractor who tells you otherwise is selling something.
