Design Before Anything Is Built

Design is usually the smallest line on a project and the one that saves the most, because it settles grading, drainage, and structure before anyone starts digging. Reopening a finished yard to fix a grade or run a line is where budgets go sideways.

We start with how you want to use the space rather than which plants you like, then work outward to layout, circulation, and planting. Our landscaping cost guide explains where the money actually goes on a full build.

Landscape Architect, Designer, or Design-Build

Three different roles get used interchangeably, and the difference matters when a project involves structure or a permit.

  • A landscape architect is licensed, and is the right call for structural work, significant grading, or drawings that must be stamped for a municipality
  • A landscape designer focuses on layout, planting, and appearance. The title is not licensed, so portfolios matter more than credentials
  • A design-build contractor, which is what we are, designs and then builds the same project, so nothing gets drawn that cannot be built to budget

Where a project genuinely needs stamped drawings, we handle that through our drawings and permits service.

How to Choose Someone to Design Your Yard

Ask to see finished work in your area rather than renderings, ideally built several seasons ago so you can see how the planting and hardscape have held up. Ask who physically builds it, because a designer who subcontracts everything has less control over the result than a crew doing its own installs.

Then ask how they handle drainage and grading before you talk about plants. It is the least interesting question in the conversation and the one that decides whether the yard still works in five years.

Common Questions

A single-element project such as a walkway or small patio generally starts around $5,000 to $12,000. A full backyard build typically runs $30,000 to $80,000, and larger properties adding a pool or structures move past $150,000. Access and what has to be excavated move the number more than the planting does.

A landscape architect is a licensed professional who can take on structural work, significant grading, and drawings that need to be stamped for a municipality. A landscape designer works on layout, planting, and appearance, and the title is not licensed in the same way. Many residential projects need neither in isolation, but a design-build contractor who does both.

Look at built work in your area rather than renderings, ask how long ago each project was completed, and confirm who physically builds it. Ask how they approach grading and drainage before anything else, since that is what determines whether the yard still works years later.

Both. We design the space and then build it with our own crews, which means the design is costed against what it actually takes to construct. Where a project needs stamped drawings or a permit, we handle that as part of the job rather than handing it back to you.
