Retaining Wall Construction in Toronto and the GTA

Armour stone, segmental block and poured concrete retaining walls, built with the drainage done right and engineered where height requires it. Serving Milton, Oakville, Toronto and the GTA.

Retaining Walls

A retaining wall is the least glamorous thing you can spend money on outdoors and often the most necessary. It holds back a slope, stops erosion, or lets a grade change sit against a structure without pushing on it, and the difference between a wall that stands for thirty years and one that leans in five is entirely hidden behind the stone.

Conscape Canada builds retaining walls in segmental block, natural and armour stone, and poured concrete, matched to the height and look your property needs. Every wall gets the same base, drainage, and backfill detail regardless of material, because that is what decides whether it lasts.

Where height crosses the point a municipality regulates, generally around one metre, we handle the engineered drawings and permit application as part of the project rather than leaving it with you.

Built to hold, not just to look like it holds.

Retaining Walls

When a Property Actually Needs One

Three situations come up repeatedly across Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, and Milton. A sloped yard with no usable flat space, where a wall converts an unusable hill into a level patio or lawn. Erosion, where soil migrates downhill and takes landscaping with it every spring. And a grade change against a structure, a walkout, or a driveway that has to be held back mechanically rather than left at its natural angle.

A low two or three course garden wall holding a raised bed is a different project at a different price. That is landscaping, not structural retaining, and it is worth knowing which one your property actually needs before pricing it.

Choosing a Wall System

Material changes the look and the price, but every system we build gets the same base and drainage discipline underneath it. Armour stone and natural stone walls are built as part of our natural stone service.

  • Segmental block: engineered concrete units that tolerate ground movement, the best value for walls up to a few feet
  • Natural and armour stone: uses mass rather than reinforcement, suits bigger drops, built as part of our natural stone work
  • Poured concrete: the most rigid option, suits tight sites and formal designs, can be finished or clad
  • Drainage stone, geotextile, and a perforated drain behind every wall, regardless of face material

If a quote names a material but never mentions drainage stone or a drain pipe behind the wall, it is pricing the visible ten percent of the job.

Permits and Engineering

Municipalities across the GTA commonly require a permit for retaining walls above roughly one metre, and taller walls generally need engineered drawings. Walls near a property line, a right of way, or a structure can trigger review at lower heights, and the exact thresholds differ between Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, and Milton.

We handle the drawings and the application through our drawings and permits service, settled before the design is final rather than after.

Common Questions

It depends on height, because cost follows the face area rather than the length alone. A typical 3 to 4 foot segmental block wall runs roughly $150 to $350 per linear foot installed, including excavation, base, and drainage. Natural stone and armour stone start higher, and poured concrete varies most, since forming and reinforcement dominate the cost.

Generally yes, above about one metre in height, and taller walls usually need engineered drawings. Thresholds differ slightly by municipality, and walls near a property line or a structure can trigger review even below that height. We confirm the requirement at the site visit.

A garden wall of two or three courses holding a raised bed is decorative and carries no real soil load behind it. A retaining wall holds back a slope or a grade change mechanically, which means it needs a proper base, drainage, and, past a certain height, engineering. The two are priced and built completely differently.

Almost always water. Soil behind a wall absorbs water, freezes, expands, and pushes, and a wall built without a way to relieve that pressure is on a timer. The clay soil across most of the GTA holds water well enough to make a missing drain the single most common cause of a leaning or failed wall.
